Why AI visibility is the next SEO

In the 2000s, every small business needed a website. In the 2010s, every small business needed to be on Google. Today, a growing share of customers start with AI — and most small-business sites haven't caught up.

What is changing

Cloudflare's 2025 Year in Review, which reports on about 20% of all internet traffic worldwide, measured a 15× jump in “user-action” AI bots — the crawlers that fetch your site in real time when a human asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity a question. AI bots in aggregate now account for 4.2% of all HTML requests on the web — essentially the same volume as Googlebot (4.5%) (Cloudflare Radar, Dec 2025).

And once those AI visits turn into humans, they're valuable. Adobe Analytics reported that traffic to U.S. retail sites from generative-AI sources grew 693% year-over-year during the 2025 holiday season, and visitors who arrived from AI tools converted 31% more than other sources (Adobe, Jan 2026). Your customers are increasingly asking ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews questions like:

• “What's a good accountant near me?”
• “Who makes custom-fit engagement rings in Los Angeles?”
• “Recommend a reliable HVAC contractor in Austin.”

When AI answers, it tends to name a small set of specific businesses with citations. If your site isn't readable by AI, you're not in that set — even if your Google rankings are strong.

Why SEO alone is no longer enough

Google shows a page of links; AI typically delivers a short answer plus a handful of cited sources. That's a much narrower funnel, and AI models pick those sources using rules most small-business websites don't follow yet:

• AI crawlers respect your robots.txt rules. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended will stay out if you've blocked them — and plenty of sites block them by accident through security plugins or overzealous config.
• Most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. If your site builds its content in the browser (React, Vue, or Angular without server-side rendering), AI often sees a nearly-empty page.
• AI relies on structured data. Schema.org markup gives AI a machine-readable version of what you do, where you are, and what you sell — in a format it can quote directly.
• AI answers are organized as Q&A. Pages with clear questions-and-answers and FAQPage schema are well-matched to how AI formats its responses.

The good news

Almost none of this requires rewriting your website. Most fixes are small additions: a file added here, a meta tag there, a schema snippet in the head. For most small-business sites, a developer can implement the full list in a handful of hours.

AI visibility is early. The businesses that start now will build a lead that compounds as more of their customers shift to asking AI first.
